Colace Glycerin Suppositories

Relieves occasional constipation (irregularity)
Generally produce bowel movement in 15 minutes
      to 1 hour

How They Are Supplied

Laxative for Adults and Children

  • 2.1 grams glycerin USP per suppository. Each container has 24 suppositories.

Laxative for Infants and Children

  • 1.2 grams glycerin USP per suppository. Each container has 12 suppositories.

Mechanism of action

The laxative effect of Colace Suppositories is due to glycerin's osmotic effect, which draws water into the stool.

Recommended Doses

Colace Laxative for Adults- Glycerin USP 2.1 grams

  • Usual dose: Adults and children 6 years of age and older: insert 1 suppository well into the rectum and retain for 15 minutes; it need not melt to produce laxative action
  • Do not exceed 1 suppository daily or as directed by a doctor
  • Children 2 to under 6 years of age: Use Colace Suppositories for infants and children.

Colace Laxative for Infants and Children Glycerin USP 1.2 grams

  • Usual dose: Children 2 to under 6 years of age: Insert 1 suppository well into the rectum and retain for 15 minutes; it need not melt to produce laxative action
  • Do not exceed 1 suppository daily or as directed by a doctor
  • Children under 2: Ask a doctor

 Warnings

  • For rectal use only
  • Do not use laxative products for longer than 1 week unless told to do so by a doctor.
  • Do not use if you are presently taking mineral oil unless told to do so by a doctor.
  • Ask a doctor before use if you have:
    • Stomach pain
    • Nausea
    • Vomiting
    • Noticed a sudden change in bowel habits that lasts over two weeks
  • Stop use and ask a doctor if you have rectal bleeding or fail to have a bowel movement after use of a laxative. These could be signs of a serious condition.
  • If pregnant or breast-feeding, ask a health professional before use.
  • Keep out of reach of children. In case of overdose, get medical help or contact a Poison Control Center right away.
